Apotheosis is open daily from the 2nd December until the 9th January, between 9am and 4pm except on the 24th and 31st December when it is open from 9am to 1pm.
Apotheosis is a term that represents the divinisation of a human being. In the ancient Greek mythology, heroes such as Hercules, transcended their human nature and achieved a divine status amongst the gods. In the Catholic faith, we humans, are also called to achieve this glorious state of being, to transcend this earthly state and be unified with God in Heavens. Artists, have tried to imagine what such a sight would be like by depicting saints being elevated to the Heavens, given glory, surrounded by angels, prophets, and other saints, whilst drowsed in golden shimmering light caressed by voluminous pure white clouds.
In this project, Darren Tanti is readdressing this theme through a contemporary perspective. Using a mix of art foms and traditional aesthetic languages, the artist presents a hybrid body of work that addresses the current state of humankind and its ultimate call; holiness. As history clearly shows, the journey towards apotheosis is riddled with all sorts of obstacles and malaises; some of which are unexpected whereas others are totally self-inflicted. Exploitation of earth resources, unequal distribution of wealth around the globe, war, hunger, abuse of power are amongst the self-inflicted causes that shackle our journey towards ultimate serenity.
In a metaphoric and symbolic way, the artist, addresses such themes within the sacred context of the Jesuit church complex. While respecting the sacred nature of the space, the artist asks the audience to reflect on these issues, and meditate on the prospects of following the aspiration we are all called upon, to transcend our human nature and become holy.
