The Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA) and the Valletta Local Council have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a monthly Maker Club for Valletta residents at the Valletta Design Cluster.
This initiative forms part of both entities’ ongoing commitment to invest in community creativity, lifelong learning, and accessible cultural participation in the heart of the capital.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Valletta Cultural Agency CEO Catherine Tabone and Valletta Mayor Olaf McKay.
Addressing the media, Valletta Cultural Agency CEO Catherine Tabone said, “The Valletta Design Cluster was created as a space for ideas, making, and community. Through this collaboration, we’re giving Valletta residents — young and old — the tools to explore, learn, and connect. The Maker Club is a simple yet powerful way to keep our city’s creative spirit alive and growing.”
Valletta Mayor Olaf McKay said, “This initiative is about people. It gives our elderly a chance to stay active and children the opportunity to learn through hands-on creativity. I’m proud that as a Local Council we are working hand in hand with the Valletta Cultural Agency to bring this project to life for our community. The Maker Club will be a space where generations meet, share, and grow together — right here in the heart of our city.”
The Valletta Local Council and the Agency declare that they are both committed to collaborating on the establishment of this new Maker Club, which specifically targets elderly residents and families with children aged 8 to 15. The initiative aims to provide a creative and social space for seniors to engage in hands-on making; introduce children to craftsmanship through guided, interactive workshops, and encourage intergenerational learning by occasionally linking both groups for joint activities that promote dialogue, shared skills, and community cohesion.
The Valletta Local Council will support the programme by engaging participants and assisting with accessibility, while the Valletta Cultural Agency, through the Valletta Design Cluster, will provide the space, tools, and facilitation, as outlined in the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding.
The Maker Club will offer hands-on sessions and collaborative workshops in areas such as design, craft, digital fabrication, sustainability, and innovation, using the fully equipped facilities of the Valletta Design Cluster. The programme is designed to be inclusive, community-driven, and intergenerational, offering Valletta residents the opportunity to explore new skills and co-create in a supportive and welcoming environment.
