Stejjer Stretti Jirxoxtaw

As part of the Valletta Cultural Agency’s 2021 cultural programme, The Strada Stretta Concept is collaborating with local Għannejja for a performance dedicated to the re-telling of infamous stories which characterise the history of Strait Street.

Stejjer Stretti Jirxoxtaw, which forms part of The Strada Stretta Concept programme under the artistic direction of Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci, will take place on the 18th November 2021. The performance begins at 20:00 and will be held at The Splendid in Strait Street, Valletta.

Stejjer Stretti Jirxoxtaw will include the participation of a famously known group of għannejja consisting of Joe Grech ‘tar-Raħal Ġdid’, Anġlu Theuma ‘il-Kina’, Mikiel Cumbo, more popularly known as ‘L-Iżgej’, as well as guitarists Johnny Saliba ta’ Birżebbuġa and Frans Casha. The group is coordinated by organiser and stage manager Noel D’Amato. The folklore music will provide an insight to the personalities of Marija s-Sewda, Cleric Nazju Falzon, Corsair Lorenzi, and Caterina Vitale, amongst other renowned names and occurrences associated with Strait Street, such as Caravaggio’s brawl and the murder of the young Twanny. This event will once again mark the għannejja’s participation in The Strada Stretta Concept programme, with previous performances being Battibekki Kontra Dante (2021), Imnalla fl-aħħar ħriġna (2020), Dido (2018), Turandot (2017) and Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ (2016), amongst several other projects.
