Introduction

The Valletta Cultural Agency is looking for participants for its upcoming projectEndemia” led by artist Nora Byrne as part of InnovAiR 2022 @ the VDC. The project focuses on urban sketching, exploratory walks around our capital city, and offline and online documentation of the outputs.

Here is what Nora says about her upcoming project:

“This project uses situational awareness and introspection in urban sketching as a form of placemaking practice in Valletta, engaging in a process of studying the urban ecosystem and native plants, interacting with the city and connecting residents to local flora that can be found within the city limits. Each session will address a different topic, ranging from flowering plants to invasive species, using a different medium which includes graphite, pen, watercolour and open media”

Meet Nora and learn about the project at the Valletta Design Cluster on 16th February 2023.

About the project

The project will help participants build a narrative sketchbook. Artist Nora Byrne will explain the different techniques one can use to sketch nature, as well as the features of the different plants and flowers, supported by the expertise of local scientists. This part of the project will be complemented by community walks and outdoor urban sketching sessions in Valletta gardens and green spots. The project will finally contribute to an online ‘green map’ of the spots explored.

Participants will be asked to attend workshops twice per week. The workshops are tentatively scheduled on Tuesdays between 6-7.30pm and Saturdays between 3-5pm, between 13th February – 2nd April 2023, however other sessions may be held at different times.

Participation is free of charge, and attendance to the sessions is voluntary.  As with any activity, the greater the number of sessions attended, the better the results will be.

The list of materials needed to sketch will be provided before the start of the course along with an unlined notebook.

Participants are advised to wear clothing and shoes appropriate for the activity. They will be considered responsible for their own health and safety throughout the sessions.

Who can apply?

There are 20 spaces available for the workshop and these will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.  Applicants not among the first 20 will be put on a waiting list in case of any withdrawals.
