VCA Presents Historic Performance of Verdi’s Requiem

Join us on 23 November 2024 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre for Verdi's Requiem. Featuring a remarkable lineup of acclaimed soloists, this performance brings together rich choral textures and orchestral grandeur, promising an unforgettable experience.

Known for its rigorous rhythms, unique melodies, and deeply moving music, Verdi’s Requiem is regarded as a monumental work within the sacred and choral repertoire.

Presented by the Valletta Cultural Agency, this high-calibre performance takes place on Saturday 23 November, 2024, at 7:30 pm at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, in Valletta. It brings together the musical forces of a double choir: Rome’s prestigious Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia comprising 40 choristers, and KorMalta, made up of some 20 choristers.

Both choirs will be accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and four exceptional soloists: Soprano Anna Pirozzi, a familiar face in Europe’s most prestigious opera houses, including Covent Garden, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Vienna Staatsoper, Paris Opera, and La Fenice in Venice, will be joined by two Maltese soloists: mezzo-soprano Marvic Monreal, who has just made a notable debut at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Madame Butterfly, and tenor Alan Sciberras, known for his roles in opera productions in Italy and Malta and whose debut in Verdi’s Requiem is highly anticipated. Completing the cast is Swedish bass-baritone John Lundgren, celebrated for his dramatic voice and iconic roles. Under the masterful direction of internationally acclaimed conductor Pier Giorgio Morandi, this event promises to be a night to remember.

Addressing a press conference at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta, the Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, praised this cultural initiative as it will offer a unique experience to the public and continue to place Malta on the international cultural map.

“This performance of Verdi’s Requiem, made possible through collaboration with established artists and a high-calibre orchestra, is a testament to our commitment to bringing international-level artistic expressions to our country,” stated Minister Bonnici. “This is more than just a performance; it is a celebration of music that unites, evokes emotions, and leaves an impact that will remain in the memory of both participants and audience members.”

Valletta Cultural Agency CEO Catherine Tabone, stated: “Verdi’s Requiem holds a significant place in Valletta’s cultural calendar. This collaboration between world-class soloists, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, KorMalta, and the VCA elevates our city as a hub for international cultural events. We are proud to host such an iconic work, showcasing the talent and dedication of all involved.”

Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Chairperson Odette Vassallo and KorMalta Artistic Director Riccardo Bianchi expressed their pride in participating in this outstanding production of Verdi’s Requiem. They highlighted their commitment to collaboration and the significance of their roles alongside the soloists and the renowned Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, reinforcing Valletta’s status as a prestigious international cultural stage.

Composed in memory of the esteemed Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, this celebrated piece combines dramatic power and emotional depth.
